About: Mr. Charles Washington had always loved to cook, and after retiring from a career in welding and fabrication, he opened Checker Board Foods in 2008. He says, “I just love to cook and it’s something I wanted to do all my life when I was welding.” Mr. Washington’s Southern upbringing is reflected in his choice of cuisine – soul food, what he was “raised up cookin’.” Born in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, Mr. Washington moved to Milwaukee at the age of 16 after having moved around in the South and East. His first cooking instructor was his mother, and he also worked at Scawl’s Restaurant on 27th and National Ave. and the Boulevard Inn on Sherman Blvd. Mr. Washington also serves as deacon at Macedonia Baptist Church. His son, Mr. Tracey Washington, assists him in his business and is planning to take over when his father retires. You may also satisfy your soul food craving during the week at Checker Board Foods’ Macedonia location: 7265 N. Teutonia Ave. in Milwaukee. They’re open 11am – 6pm, Monday – Friday.
