Fondy Farmers Market makes healthy eating possible in inner city

It’s no big surprise to Young Kim that some residents of the central city would like better food options.

A lot of people here know how to eat well,” said Kim, executive director of the Fondy Farmers Market at Fond du Lac and North avenues, the largest fresh food market in Milwaukee’s central city.

Haymarket Days Festival: 
Celebrating 80 Years of Eating Local 


You're invited to join in the fun at "The Haymarket" (aka Fondy Farmers Market) this Saturday. We'll be celebrating the market's 80-year legacy of bringing locally grown produce to the heart of Milwaukee. Enjoy free activities for all ages, including music, storytelling, face painting, a watermelon seed spitting contest, cooking and canning demos, and food samples. For a complete line-up, click here. As this is the culminating event for Milwaukee's Eat Local Challenge, local food organizations will be on hand with educational resources. Haymarket Days takes place this Saturday, September 10th from 9am to 1pm at Fondy Farmers Market, rain or shine. The market will be open from 7am until 3pm as usual.

Taste the Season: "Less-traditional Southern"
Taste the Season takes place Saturdays, 9am - noon
Guest Chef Deborah Spriggs-Ross, executive chef and owner of Expressively "Your" Personal Chef Services, will demonstrate some of her signature "less-traditional Southern" favorites using cabbage, collards, Brussels sprouts, and sweet potatoes. In addition to cooking as a personal chef, Chef Deborah is the resident chef and food writer for Girlfriends Health Guide and has taught Milwaukee-area youth healthy cooking and living. Youth Booth: Healthy Lunch Bag Craft
Youth Booth takes place Saturdays, 9am - noon
Tired of that same 'ol brown paper lunch bag? Kids can stop by the Youth Booth to create a colorful bag by using veggies like rubber stamps. Each lunch bag comes with a quick guide to making a healthy, well-balanced lunch.

 officially takes place the first two weeks of September. The Challenge encourages people to increase their consumption of locally grown food, not only during these two weeks, but all year round. Eating locally helps the environment, the local economy and our community. Plus, local food just plain tastes better!
